Blue Butterfly Crossbody Satchel Free Crochet Pattern

Introduction

This little satchel is the perfect project for anyone who has mastered single crochet and wants to make something they will actually carry every day. It is built from one simple flat rectangle that gets folded and seamed into a petite bag with a rounded, tapering flap, so the construction is easier than it looks. The baby blue cotton is trimmed in cotton candy pink stripes and finished with two tiny butterfly appliqués, one blue and one pink, for a soft fairycore feel. At about 7.5" wide by 6" tall, it is light, smooth, and just big enough for your phone, keys, and a lip balm.

Materials Needed

  • Yarn: Worsted weight (category 4) cotton yarn. Baby blue (A): 200 yd. Cotton candy pink (B): 50 yd.
  • Hook: 4.0 mm (G-6) crochet hook
  • Notions: Tapestry needle, stitch markers, scissors, measuring tape
  • Finished size: Approx. 7.5" wide x 6" tall x 2" deep, with a 44" crossbody strap

Abbreviations

  • ch — chain: make a loop of yarn and pull it through the loop on your hook.
  • sc — single crochet: insert hook, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through both loops.
  • hdc — half double crochet: yarn over, insert hook, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through all three loops.
  • dc — double crochet: yarn over, insert hook, pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through two loops, yarn over and pull through the last two loops.
  • sc2tog — single crochet two stitches together (a decrease): insert hook in the next stitch, pull up a loop, insert hook in the following stitch, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through all three loops.
  • st(s) — stitch(es)
  • A / B — Color A (baby blue) / Color B (cotton candy pink)

Gauge

16 sts and 18 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) in single crochet. Work a small swatch in single crochet and measure a 4-inch section; if you have more stitches than 16, go up a hook size, and if you have fewer, go down.

Tips Before You Start

  • Keep your single crochet tension even and slightly firm; a loose fabric will stretch out of shape once the bag is filled.
  • Count your 30 stitches at the end of every row of the body and flap — the fold and flap shaping depend on an accurate stitch count.
  • Use a stitch marker at each end of the fold line (after Row 12 of the body) so the front pocket and back line up perfectly when you seam.
  • Cotton has little stretch, which is ideal for a bag, but block the finished pieces lightly before seaming so the edges lie flat.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Bag Body (Color A)

Row 1: Ch 31, sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across (30 sc).

Rows 2-36: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across (30 sc). Fasten off.

Mark the fold: the bottom 12 rows become the front pocket, and the top 24 rows become the back and flap.

Side Seams (Color B)

Fold the rectangle so the bottom 12 rows sit in front of the back panel, creating a 2" deep pocket. With B, join yarn at one bottom corner and work 1 row of sc along the side edge, joining front to back; repeat along the other side edge. Fasten off.

Flap (Color A)

Join A at the top edge of the back panel.

Row 1: Ch 1, sc in each st across (30 sc).

Rows 2-10: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across (30 sc).

Row 11: Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc in next 26 sts, sc2tog (28 sts).

Row 12: Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc in next 24 sts, sc2tog (26 sts).

Row 13: Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc in next 22 sts, sc2tog (24 sts).

Row 14: Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc in next 20 sts, sc2tog (22 sts).

Row 15: Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc in next 18 sts, sc2tog (20 sts). Fasten off.

Trim Stripes (Color B)

With B, work 1 row of sc along the flap edge (from one side of the flap base, around the rounded edge, to the other side) and 1 row of sc along the bag opening. Fasten off.

Strap (Color B)

Row 1: Ch 3, sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across (2 sc).

Rows 2-200: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across (2 sc). Fasten off. The strip should measure about 44" long.

Butterfly Appliqué (make 2 — one in A, one in B)

Wings (make 4 per butterfly, 2 in A and 2 in B): Ch 4. Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next ch, dc in last ch (3 sts). Fasten off.

Body (contrasting color): Ch 6. Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across (5 sc). Fasten off.

Sew two wings to each side of the body to complete one butterfly.

Assembly and Finishing

Sew the strap to the sides of the bag at the top, one end on each side, checking that it hangs evenly. Sew one butterfly to the front of the pocket, one blue and one pink, using the photo as a guide or placing them side by side. Weave in all ends neatly on the inside. Lightly block the bag by misting it with water, shaping it to 7.5" x 6" x 2", and letting it dry flat with the flap closed.

Pro Tips and Variations

  • Add a small button or a crocheted chain loop under the flap tip so the bag stays closed when you are on the move.
  • Make the strap longer for a crossbody fit on taller frames, or shorter for a shoulder bag — just add or remove rows in multiples of two.
  • Swap the butterfly colors or add a third appliqué in a contrasting shade for a bolder, more playful look.
